Jack and Monica Pizura welcome you to join them on their working organic orange ranch and to step back in time as you enter their gracious turn-of-the-century home. Designed in 1901 by a Pasadena architect for Monica's ancestor, Illinois State Senator Fred E. Harding, the incomparable two-story craftsman-style home shows elements of a British Colonial style found in India and Africa--a must-stay for lovers of history, antiques, original art, and oriental rugs. Choose the peaceful Juliana Suite with 360 degree views of trees, mountains and sunsets, the Lucy Harding Room with its vintage queen-size bed and private bath or the Garden Cottage with stacked beds (the top a twin, the bottom one a full-size feather bed), intimate enclosed garden shower and private patio entrance.
Wicky-Up is a member of the slow foods movement, buying fresh, organic and locally whenever possible. A candlelight breakfast of culinary delights features fresh-squeezed orange juice from the ranch and is served on Villeroy and Boch china in a dining room appointed with 19th c. antiques. Classical music quietly plays in the background. Some favorites are baked french toast naranjo, fresh dill egg souffles, omeletes with roasted rosemary potatoes, lemon ricotta pancakes, lavender/honey glazed organic grapefruit.
Little "extras" include Wi-Fi, beverages on the verandah, in the garden, or by the fireplace, fresh cut flowers, fluffy bathrobes, gardens with cooing doves, a detailed tour of the historic home, and unforgettable, old-fashioned hospitality. Monica's careers have included school teaching, flight attending for American Airlines, law office administration, British tour booking, motherhood, and managing three small businesses. Jack's hobbies, which are becoming a cottage industry, are woodworking and copper sculpture. He uses his building skills to renovate old properties to rent. He has a background in electrical/mechanical engineering which he applies to their heating/cooling business. He finds farming a healthy contrast.
VISA, MC, American Express, Discover cards and personal checks accepted. Ask about year-round specials. Smoking is allowed on the garden patio. Ask about children. Located 18 miles from the main entrance to Sequoia National Park. |
